Attach documents to a chat

Other languages

Drag a spreadsheet, PDF, Word file or image into an Agent Mode chat, see and control whether the document you have open goes with your message, see beside each question which documents it was sent with, and find everything the chat can read in the top bar.

Attach documents to a chat

Sometimes the thing you want to ask about is not in your case: it's a spreadsheet on your desktop, a PDF someone emailed you, or a screenshot. You can drop those straight into an Agent Mode chat and ask questions about them alongside everything Claira already knows about the case.

Attach a file

Drag and drop the file anywhere onto the chat panel. A dashed outline appears while you drag; release to attach. Several files at once is fine: drop them together, and they all go with the same message.

If you'd rather not drag, click the paperclip at the left of the message box and pick your files. Hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) while you click, or Shift to take a run of them, to pick more than one.

The file appears in the message box straight away, with a spinner while Claira reads it. Once it is attached, it waits there for your next message; click the × on it to remove it before you send. When you send your next message, the file goes with it, and it stays with the chat afterwards, so you can keep asking about it turn after turn.

What you can attach

TypeFiles
Spreadsheets.xlsx, .csv
Documents.pdf, .docx
Text.txt, .md, .json
Images.png, .jpg, .webp

Up to 10 files per chat, 10 MB each. That is a ceiling for the whole chat, not for one message: everything you attach stays with the chat. Remove a file you are finished with to free a slot.

Older .xls spreadsheets aren't supported. Open the file in Excel and save it as .xlsx or .csv, then attach it.

The document you have open

While you have a document open, it's the first thing in the message box: outlined in green, with its document ID and title. It goes with your next message unless you take it out, and it goes whole: Claira receives everything it can read of that document, whatever your message says. You never have to phrase a question a particular way to make Claira look at the document you're on.

After its name, the chip says what that comes to:

The chip saysClaira receives
Text and fileThe document's extracted text and its own file: the PDF, image, audio or video. This is what goes with most messages. A document with no file of its own, or one larger than 15 MB, goes as text.
FileThe document has no extracted text, so its own file carries it.
TextOnly the extracted text, because you are working on a local model and the document's own file is never sent then.
No textThe document has no extracted text and no file that can be sent, so only its title and document ID go.

Hover over the chip, or move to it with the Tab key, to see the full title and what goes.

Keep the open document out of your messages

Click the × on the chip to stop sending the document. The chip stays in the message box, dashed and marked Not sent, and Claira receives nothing of the document with your messages: not its text, not its file, not even its title. If you ask about "this document" anyway, Claira tells you it wasn't sent. The chip is the whole decision: it's either all of the document or none of it.

The document stays out until you click the arrow on the chip (Send again) or open another document in Discover. A newly opened document goes with your messages as usual.

A chat you open with Revise with Agent or Answer with Agent on a Case Context starts with the document kept out, because you're there to talk about the context, not the document on screen. Click Send again on the chip if you want the Agent to read it too. When you move to another chat, the document goes with your messages there as usual.

Taking the document out applies from your next message on. Anything the chat already received of it with earlier questions stays part of the conversation; to ask without it altogether, start a new chat with the document kept out.

See what each question was sent with

Every question you send shows, just above it, the documents it was sent with:

  • The document you have open in Discover, outlined in green and named by its title (or by its document ID when it has no title). It appears on every question you send while that document is open, because Claira receives its text, its own file, or both. A question you send with the document kept out doesn't show it. If you move to another document and keep asking, the next questions show the new document, so you can see where the conversation moved from one document to the next.
  • Files you attached, with their type icon, on the question they were first sent with.
  • A Case Context, with the Case Context clipboard icon, on every question Claira could read it with. Click it to open that Case Context.

Hover over a document, or move to it with the Tab key, to see its full title and what Claira received of it with that question: its text, its own file, or both. A file you remove from the chat later stays on the question it was sent with, struck through.

See what a chat can read

When a chat has documents in it, a paperclip with a count appears in the top bar. Click it to see everything the chat can currently read, in three groups:

  • Attached files: the files you added, each with its size. Click the × beside one to remove it. Removing a file also deletes it from Claira's storage.
  • Case Contexts attached: the Case Contexts this chat can read, by their current name. Click one to open it.
  • Nuix documents referenced: outlined in green, these are the Discover documents this conversation has already been shown. They appear automatically as you work, and you don't remove them: they're a record of what the chat has seen, not something you added.

Each entry also says when it came into the conversation: First sent with the date and time of the question that brought it in (click it to jump to that question), or Not sent yet for a file waiting for your next message.

A document joins the Nuix list once Claira has actually received something of it: its extracted text, its own file (a PDF, an image, audio or video), or both. Hover over a document, or move to it with the Tab key, to see which. If Claira received nothing from a document you had open, it won't appear, so the list tells you what the chat could genuinely use, not just what happened to be on screen.

Case Contexts in a chat

A chat can also carry a Case Context, which Claira reads the same way it reads the case background anywhere else. It happens on its own in two places:

  • You press Generate search terms on a Case Context. The chat opens with that context attached to your question, and the document you have open in Discover is deliberately left out: you asked about the context, not about that document.
  • You press Revise with Agent on a draft. The chat is about that context, so every question in it shows the context it is revising, and the document you have open in Discover starts out kept out.

The chip sits above your question with the Case Context clipboard icon. Click it to go straight back to that Case Context. While a chat carries one, questions about the case background are answered from that context, even when your case has several and another one is the default.

If someone renames the Case Context, the chip follows the new name, because Claira reads it fresh each time. If the Case Context is deleted, the chip stays on the questions it was sent with, struck through, and Claira tells you it can no longer read it instead of guessing what it said.

How Claira reads your files

For spreadsheets, Word files, text files and most PDFs, Claira reads the text in your browser and sends only that text. The file itself never leaves your computer.

Some files have no text to read: a scanned PDF, or an image. Those are sent to Claira's secure storage in your region so the model can look at them directly, and they're deleted as soon as you remove the attachment.

Very large files are shortened to keep the conversation responsive. When that happens the file shows shortened in the list, and Claira will tell you if your question needs a part it didn't receive.

Things worth knowing

  • Attachments follow a branch. If you branch a chat, the new copy keeps the same documents, shown beside the same questions, so it answers the same way.
  • Teammates can see them. On a shared chat, teammates viewing your conversation can see the list of documents and the documents beside each question. Only you, as the owner, can add or remove them.
  • Local model. With a local model turned on, files Claira can read as text work normally. A scanned PDF or an image can't be attached, because reading it would mean sending it off your machine.
  • Ask naturally. Once a file is attached, just ask: "what does this spreadsheet show?", "summarise the attached PDF". You don't need to name the file: a file you attach to a question is treated as the subject of that question, and Claira reads it before answering. Files you attached to earlier questions stay available too, and Claira uses them whenever your question touches on them; name one if you want to be certain which you mean.
